Dispositivi Teatrali
SAL is a playful seating composition which is made of six simple black benches and three red plastic canisters from the prop storage room of the theatre “Vereinigte Bühnen Bozen”. The brief was to create seating options that could be used for the press conference of the new opening of the new season of the Bolzano Theatre. The seating tools should be small, modular, and playful. Instead of building up a completely new structure from new materials, we offered the theatre a cheaper option, by using the props they already had to create a playful collection of seating options. By twisting three of the simple benches around 80 degrees vertically, we could create an arrangement of different sitting formations that could be arranged differently depending on the spatial availabilities of the theatre. The red plastic canisters which originally used to serve as liquid containers are also given the new function of providing more comfort as arm rests at the outer edges of the composition. They are attached with lashing straps that are also used under the benches to hold them together. The overall appearance of the design is very playful and brings the domestic space into the public. It provides many different possibilities to sit and lean on and engage in conversations and interactions in diverse arrangements. Playfulness, simplicity and elegance are combined in a harmonious way within a memorable and unique arrangement in a colour palette that can often be found in theatre settings. The composition is ideal for the open waiting space in front of the auditoriums for visitors and staff to rest and converse before and after performances. This project was developed in collaboration with Lotte Huggel und Sofie Neudecker.
